Licences to keep pet shops are issued under the Pet Animals Act
1951 and are renewable annually. Any business offering pets
for gain is also subject to licensing conditions. The licence
can stipulate a number of conditions to secure the well-being of
the animals. The council will arrange for the premises to be
inspected by a veterinary surgeon to ensure accommodation is
suitable for welfare of animals. The licence will be issued subject
to compliance with licence conditions and payment of the licence
fee.
