Conservation Areas

Conservation Areas are 'areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance' - Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

There are 37 designated Conservation areas in Bath & North East Somerset.   In order to protect the special character of these areas, planning permission is required for certain external works to dwellings which would not normally be required elsewhere.

If you live in a Conservation Area and are thinking about carrying out alterations to your property or work to trees, it is recommended that you first seek advice from the Council.

For further information please contact the Council's Planning Services on 01225 394041 or email development_control@bathnes.gov.uk, or view the guidance notes available on this page.
