Chilling out at Radstock Youth Centre

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

YOUNG people from Radstock Youth Centre have been busy over the past few weeks designing and creating their very own chill out zone.

The centre – run by Bath & North East Somerset Council – was reopened in autumn 2003 and to make sure it was offering its users what they wanted, a consultation exercise was carried out.

Jayne Lewis, Youth Worker at the Centre, said: “The majority of the young people who use the club had not been involved in a consultation process before and as they began to realise their input was vital, they started to gain confidence.

“From the consultations it soon became clear that what the young people wanted was a space of their own that was accessible, comfortable and designed by them.

What resulted was the chill out zone that is now being enjoyed by all the members.”

From the start – and with help from staff at the centre and local artist Andrew Henon – the members were in charge and made all the decisions regarding every aspect of the project from the choice of colours on the walls to the furniture they wanted in the room.

The members also decorated the room and made pieces of art to hang on the walls with the help of Andrew.

Jayne added: “Now that the chill out zone is open, the young people feel proud of their achievements and have a strong sense of ownership over the space. I know that every member of the club and everyone at Bath & North East Somerset Council is really pleased with the final results.”

Notes to Editors:

Photographers and reporters are welcome to go along and visit the new chill out zone at 7.30pm on Monday, May 10 when Cllr Jonathan Gay, Executive Member for Education, will be visiting the new facilities.
