Come and meet
Major Davis
VISITORS to the
Roman Baths over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend can discover what
life was like in Bath in 1900 from the Victorian excavator of the
baths – Major Charles Davis.
The Major – played by actor Andrew
Ashmore – will be having conversations with visitors during
Saturday, Sunday and Monday and people can stop him and ask about
life in Victorian times and hear about his discovery of the Roman
Baths.
Helen Mansfield, Museums Education
Manager, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is delighted to
welcome Andrew back to the Roman Baths for the May Day Bank Holiday
weekend.
“Andrew has assumed the part of
Major Davis many times. He has done an incredible amount of research
into the part and is very knowledgeable about the Roman Baths.
If you’re visiting this weekend make
sure you look out for him!”
Major Charles Davis was Bath’s city
surveyor and architect in late 19th century and worried by a leak
from the medieval King’s Bath in 1878, decided to explore the ground
around it and in doing so found Roman remains.
During the 1880s and 1890s further
explorations revealed more part of the Roman Baths creating one of
the world’s most famous heritage attractions.
The Roman Baths is open 9am-5pm
(last exit 6pm) during the Bank Holiday weekend.
