Green waste collections continue over Easter break

BATH & North East Somerset Council is reminding its residents that its fortnightly garden waste and cardboard collections will continue as normal over the Easter holiday.

The Council recently confirmed that the collections would continue following a successful trial period and more than 16 percent of households in the area have been using the new service.

The scheme uses wheeled bins and green sacks to collect the waste and since the launch around 6,000 bins have been ordered and almost 100,000 sacks have been purchased.

The scheme allows residents to have their garden waste and cardboard collected from their properties once a fortnight and is particularly useful for people who are unable to get to the Household Waste and Recycling Centres themselves or have too much of this type of waste to compost at home.

Residents can put their waste out in wheeled bins for a charge of £36 for three years or paper sacks at 35p each. Residents can also put out cardboard only free of charge.

Bins and sacks can be ordered through the Council’s Action Line, but to make the collections as accessible as possible, there are a growing number of local outlets that are also selling the paper sacks including shops, post offices, garages and parish councils in addition to the seven council cash offices and household waste recycling centres.

Cllr Rosemary Todd, Executive Member for Sustainability and the Environment, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council wants to make it easy for people to get hold of the sacks, at these local outlets.  Some will be open at different times over the Easter weekend, in case people need more to cope with their garden ‘spring cleaning’.  So look out for the posters in your area!”

Anyone who wants to find out more about the collections or local outlets or who wishes to take part can contact the Council’s Action Line on 01225 394041 or e-mail actionline@bathnes.gov.uk or log on to www.bathnes.gov.uk/wasteservices
