Guidance for communities in an emergency

BATH & North East Somerset Council is helping towns and parishes in its area to plan for a major disaster or emergency.

The Council’s Emergency Management Unit has issued guidance booklets to all 49 town and parish councils in Bath & North East Somerset.

Rolf Drury, Emergency Management Officer, said: “This booklet is intended to be a community-owned resource where the communities prepare a data base of facilities and supplies which might be required, either by themselves for self help, or used to support the efforts of the emergency services.

“No-one wants to think about an emergency or disaster occurring in their community but hopefully this booklet will provide instant information that will help both the communities and emergency services.”

To assist with the co-ordination process between Bath & North East Somerset Council and the parish and town councils, Brian Parkes, who has many years working in emergency management, has been appointed to act as a voluntary liaison officer.

And in each parish it is hoped that a volunteer will be appointed to take on the role of updating and maintaining their information databases.

Cllr Malcolm Hanney, Executive Member for Resources, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council has prepared this document with the hope that it will provide a real and practical resource for communities while also providing an impetus for the concept of community preparedness and resilience.”

The Clerk of West Harptree Parish Council, Jan Burdge, has given her backing to the scheme. She said: “It has made us focus on the resources and skills available in our Parish in the event of an emergency.”
