Jane Austen: Film and Fashion - souvenir guide now available

A 36 PAGE souvenir guidebook to complement the Museum of Costume’s latest special exhibition is now available.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has produced the book for the Jane Austen: Film and Fashion exhibition. It costs £3.95 and is now available at the Museum in Bennett Street, Bath.

Patricia Dunlop, Commercial Marketing Manager for Heritage Services, said: “This is the first time Bath & North East Somerset Council has produced a guidebook especially for one of the special exhibitions at the Museum of Costume.

“The exhibition is already proving to be a great success with more than 20,000 people visiting since it opened in February. We hope the guidebook will be a perfect souvenir to the many visitors we are expecting throughout the summer months.”

The book, which is full of colour photographs and drawings, contains information about all of Jane Austen’s six novels and the television and film adaptations that have been created from them.

It also explains how costume designers clothed their cast in the light of very little information from the novels about what the characters actually wore.

Jane Austen: Film and Fashion is open throughout 2004 and contains 24 costumes from well known TV and film adaptations including the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice and Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow, alongside original pieces from the Museum of Costume’s extensive collection.

The Museum of Costume – run by Bath & North East Somerset Council – is based at the Assembly Rooms in Bennett Street, Bath. It is open daily 11am-4pm November to February and 11am-5pm March to October.

The Museum of Costume is based at Bath’s historic Assembly Rooms. It tells the story of fashion over the last 400 years and is one of the finest museums of fashionable dress in the world. More than 150 figures dressed in original garments are on display at any one time, drawn from the museum’s collection of more than 30,000 historic items. The collection is designated by Re:source as an “outstanding collection of national and international significance”.
