Kurt Jackson: Two Woods

AN evocative new exhibition by one of Britain’s most exciting landscape artists is to get its world premiere at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath from Saturday, May 15 to Thursday, July 15.

For this exhibition at the Bath & North East Somerset Council-run Art Gallery, Cornish artist Kurt Jackson has created a series of paintings encapsulating the atmosphere and feel of two West Country woodlands as they change with the seasons.

To create these stunning images, the artist undertook residencies at Skewjack Wood in the far west of Cornwall and Ashcombe Wood just to the north of the city of Bath during the course of a year.

Jon Benington, Curator of the Victoria Art Gallery, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is very proud to stage this wonderful exhibition.

“The paintings were done out-of-doors and successfully recreate for the viewer the feeling of being in the woodland itself. Leaves and soil are sometimes incorporated into the pictures, which measure up to eight feet square.

“We are delighted to be working with a conservation body on this exhibition.  The Woodland Trust is a registered charity and owner of Ashcombe Wood.  Thanks to sponsorship, we have been able to print an exhibition catalogue, sales of which will benefit the Trust.”

Born in 1961, Kurt Jackson has always had a fascination with nature and studied zoology at St Peter’s College in Oxford during which time he attended art courses at the Ruskin College of Art.

In 1984 he moved to Cornwall and has used the local coastal landscape as a key motif in much of his work.

During the past 22 years he has exhibited extensively and has had numerous solo shows. Two Woods is the latest in a series of residency projects at galleries across the  country.

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, Kurt Kackson will be giving a free talk at the Victoria Art Gallery on Saturday, May 15 from 11.30am-12.30pm. As places are limited, listeners are advised to attend punctually.

Full details about the exhibition are available on the Gallery’s website at www.victoriagal.org.uk or by calling 01225 477233.

The Victoria Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5.30pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 2pm-5pm. The Gallery is closed on Monday and admission is free.
