Ladybird Books appeal

FROM Saturday, May 15 to Thursday, July 15 visitors to the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath will be taken on a journey back to their childhood.

The Bath & North East Somerset Council-run Art Gallery is holding an exhibition of works by John Berry – an artist most famous for illustrating a number of classic Ladybird Books in the 1960s and 1970s.

To complement the exhibition, the Gallery is asking local people to scour their bookshelves and attics to see if they have original copies of the books in which the exhibits actually featured.

These will then be included in the exhibition alongside 38 original watercolour illustrations by John Berry.

Jon Benington, Curator of the Victoria Art Gallery, said: “We’ve already had a great response from members of the public who have donated most of the books we are looking for but we are still missing seven which would really be a great addition to the exhibition when it opens in May.”

The seven books are: Car Makers, Railway, Navy, Customs, Police, Airman and Ship Builders.

Jon added: “People can be assured that Bath & North East Somerset Council will look after their books and they will form an important part of the exhibition. We will of course return the books after the exhibition.”

If you have one of these books that you would be willing to lend to the Victoria Art Gallery please contact Jon Benington on 01225 477772 or e-mail  jon_benington@bathnes.gov.uk
