A celebration event is being held this Friday (Jun 11) to
celebrate the achievement of hundreds of youngsters who have
volunteered to carry out community work.
More than 200 people
are involved in the Millennium Volunteering project in Bath &
North East Somerset Council area and they have all made a
commitment to complete 200 hours of community work within a year.
The special event on Friday evening, at the Green Park Tavern,
Lower Bristol Road, Bath, will be an ideal opportunity for
youngsters to get together to share their experiences and to
celebrate their achievements. (Photographers welcome between 6pm
and 8 pm)
There will be live music, African drumming, fire dancing and
some amazing graffiti art work on display.
Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Cllr Paul
Crossley, said: “ Bath & North East Somerset is proud of the
achievements of these youngsters. Their dedication, motivation and
hard work should be recognised and this is one way of doing that.”
All the volunteers are aged between 16 and 24 and are involved
in a variety of projects – from helping in youth clubs, at local
schools or sports clubs, to working on nature conservation
projects, or with the elderly.
Their work is given an accreditation which can be used when
applying for a job or used in a personal statement when applying
to further education.
Millennium Volunteers co-ordinator Harri Harrison said: “The
young people can pick up valuable skills and meet new people
through this scheme. They can get involved in an area which might
lead them to follow a specific career path.”
He added that anyone interested in becoming a Millennium
Volunteer was very welcome to attend the celebration. Bath & North
East Somerset councillors have also been invited to the event.
Millennium Volunteers is a national project which, is run by
Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Youth and Community team on a
local level.
